Ms. Beat’s housewarming, on a Monday night in January, drew a crowd that included the drag luminaries Bianca Del Rio and Alaska 5000, the actors Kate Flannery (“The Office”) and Selene Luna (“Coco”), and the transgender activists Andrea James and Calpernia Addams.
While the Bachelor was in its prime, garnering huge ratings for ABC, in 2008 LOGO, a much smaller, niche cable network, along with World of Wonder, the studio that would later bring us the cultural phenom, RuPaul’s Drag Race and critically acclaimed films like The Eyes Of Tammy Faye and Party Monsterpremiered a quaint but little known show that ran in a similar theme.
That show was TransAmerican Love Story. In a format similar to the Bachelor and the Bachelorette, it centered itself around a beautiful woman looking for love, and her would-be possibilities… but there was one glaring difference:
That woman was Calpernia Addams. A Transgender woman.
Calpernia wasn’t just a random casting choice. She was the perfect choice.

“ Gender liberation helps everyone, not just transgender people. Part of our goal is to break down the myth that men and women must adhere to rigid, distinct, stereotypical roles. Our movement is about allowing everyone to express themselves freely and safely,” says Andrea James, a transgender rights activist, producer and director. James has directed the short film Transproofed that explores transgender dating and disclosure. She has also worked with Tinder to make dating apps transgender friendly.

This week marks the 10th Anniversary of the premiere of Transamerican Love Story! In the show, potential suitors try to woo Calpernia Addams, a transgender bachelorette in search of love. Enjoy this clip from the very first episode of the show! Happy Valentine’s Day!
During that interregnum, there had been one other significant Hollywood portrayal of a trans woman: Transamerica. When I saw it in 2005, Transamerica felt like an exercise in compromise, written in the awareness that studios would not cast a trans actor as a lead, but trying to make space by using trans people in supporting roles. The first person on screen was trans woman Andrea James, teaching Bree (Felicity Huffman) how to feminise her voice. Despite this, and a scene where Bree attends at a party for trans women, played by trans women, Huffman could not escape the need to establish her character’s transsexuality through a series of clichés: putting inserts in her bra; applying make-up in the mirror (while dressed all in pink); seeing a psychiatrist who praises her “authenticity”. Even this timidity, though, outdid The Danish Girl.

Author Charlie Craggs invited me to write a piece for her book To My Trans Sisters.
Dedicated to trans women everywhere, this inspirational collection of letters written by successful trans women shares the lessons they learnt on their journeys to womanhood, celebrating their achievements and empowering the next generation to become who they truly are.
Written by politicians, scientists, models, athletes, authors, actors, and activists from around the world, these letters capture the diversity of the trans experience and offer advice from make-up and dating through to fighting dysphoria and transphobia.
By turns honest and heartfelt, funny and furious or beautiful and brave, these letters send a clear message of hope to their sisters: each of these women have gone through the struggles of transition and emerged the other side as accomplished, confident women; and if we made it sister, so can you!
