November 20, 2013

PETA’s letter, which was drafted by Bruce Wieland of their Los Angeles office, reads, “We appreciate the strong case that LIVING THINGS makes for going vegan and that it does so in such a well-acted, engaging, and ultimately entertaining way.”

The letter then goes on to say, “From the meat industry’s rampant abuse of animals and the environmental devastation that it causes to the tremendous health benefits of a vegan diet, there are many significant reasons why going vegan should be at the top of everyone’s priority list. We wish more movies focused on this life-saving message in as compelling a manner as LIVING THINGS, and we hope this fine film reaches the wide audience that it deserves.”

11 Transgender Stars Weigh In on Trans Images in Entertainment

Andrea James, Writer, director, producer and transgender advocate

1. What transgender story or character has been particularly meaningful or impactful to you?

“My favorite fictional trans character is Ludo Fabre in Alain Berliner’s 1997 Belgian film ‘Ma Vie En Rose.’ The film came out during my own transition and is one of the first films to depict trans youth, a topic now at the forefront of the trans rights movement. It’s an absolute outrage that this sweet and thoughtful film is rated R by the Motion Picture Association of America. An honorable mention to my favorite metaphorically trans character: Rachael, the replicant who “passes” as human in Ridley Scott’s 1982 sci-fi classic ‘Blade Runner.'”

2. What is a common stereotype or clichĂŠ in stories about transgender people that you never want to see again?

“If I never see another transgender “regret narrative” again, I’d be just fine with that. Authors and journalists who wouldn’t dream of taking the ‘ex-gay’ movement seriously are happy to over-represent the small number of people who vacillate in how they express their gender, often presenting them as self-hating ‘ex-trans’ people. There’s nothing wrong with moving around on the gender spectrum if someone wants, and everyone should be allowed to express their gender however they wish, whenever they wish. We must continually work to end the ‘all or nothing’ mentality about gender identity and expression.”

The Tenth Voice

KKFI 90.1 FM

SEPTEMBER 28, 2013

We have a great show lined up for Trans Talk this Saturday, 9/28!  Sandra Meade is hosting, and she says you won’t want to miss this one, so be sure to tune in to KKFI 90.1 FM at 1:00pm central time, or go to kkfi.org and listen to live streaming audio on the internet.  If you happen to miss the show, no worries, we’ll be posting the podcast later so you won’t miss out!

Sandra’s first interview is with Andrea James, an American writer, director, producer, and activist based in Los Angeles.  Andrea recently wrote an article for Boingboing.net about the controversy surrounding Mr. Cee, a popular hip-hop DJ in New York who was publicly exposed and humiliated after having approached a transgender woman for sex.  Today, we’ll discuss that difficult topic:  the marginalization of the transgender community and the obstacles/public shaming faced by people who want to spend private time with them.

Kudos to writer/producer Andrea James, who has just finished Family Restaurant, a short movie for kids with lesbian and gay parents.

While there are books for kids in lesbian and gay families, there is little TV or movie content out there.

The making of Family Restaurant, a short film for kids with LGBT parents

June 21, 2013

Longtime friend and Boing Boing contributor Andrea James has just completed a Kickstartered short film for children from LGBT families. I saw it this week, and was blown away by how funny and sweet it was. I know how hard she’s worked on this; a true labor of love. I hope kids (and grown-ups) far and wide have a chance to experience both the art and the message. For readers in the SF Bay Area, there’s a screening on Sunday June, 2013 in the Frameline LGBT film festival at San Francisco’s Castro Theatre. Andrea writes in to Boing Boing with the backstory.—Xeni Jardin

A Reason for Pride: Gay Parents Are Changing the World

Comedian Alec Mapa and his filmmaker husband, Jamie Hebert, expected to keep traveling even after starting a family. Among the pages and pages of questions during the screening process for foster parenting, they indicated they wanted a boy age 3 to 5. “I never wanted a baby. I wanted someone independent,” Hebert says. “We travel so much, our lives are so mobile, so I wanted someone who could just grab on and go.”

“We hit the ground running with Zion,” Mapa remembers. “He went all over the world before he was even adopted.” The couple will regale you, as proud fathers do, with stories about their son’s wit. Like the time Mapa lectured Zion, now 7, at a Whole Foods and heard back, “And the Oscar goes to…” Or after moving too slowly, Hebert gets  “And now…I’m 70.”

The latest incarnation of Mapa’s stand-up act, Baby Daddy, is devoted to his life as father. Zion can’t possibly be separated from his parents’ careers. Hebert just finished work on Family Restaurant, a short film in which Zion lends voice to one of the characters. But their lives are changing — starting with all the traveling.

Alec Mapa fundraising for BABY DADDY, a comedy special/documentary on gay parenthood

LOS ANGELES, CA – April 29, 2013 — Actor and comedian Alec Mapa has launched a fundraiser to bring his award-winning one-man show BABY DADDY to screens worldwide. The documentary will include his stand-up special as well as behind-the-scenes looks at how Alec’s life has changed since he and his husband adopted a child through the foster care system.

Mapa said, “I love live theater and stand-up, but this film will allow my show to reach a wider audience, including those who prefer to view entertainment without pants on.”

Mapa and his husband Jamison Hebert have been very active in promoting LGBT adoption since adopting their son Zion through the foster care system in 2010. They are one of the families portrayed in a national adoption awareness campaign for the “Raise a Child” organization (raiseachild.us), have done press interviews, spoken on numerous panels, and received awards for raising foster and adoption awareness in the LGBT community.

Last year, Mapa and his family starred in “Family Restaurant,” a children’s film for kids with gay and lesbian parents. That project, which features puppets and children with gay and lesbian parents, is currently on the festival circuit. It’s scheduled to be used in educational programs in schools starting in the fall. Andrea James, who directed “Family Restaurant” and produced it with Hebert, has signed on to direct the Baby Daddy project. James said, “We had incredible fun working on the kid’s show last year, so we wanted to follow up with another project on a topic so close to our hearts.”

The film will be produced by Thought Moment Media. Hebert said, “Last year, we had such a great response to fundraising through Kickstarter for “Family Restaurant.” We wanted to do something even more ambitious this year while continuing to spread the message of foster and adoption by gays and lesbians not only to our LGBT community, but also to the wider world. We know there are many people who want to support a film like this and its timely message.”

Mapa plans to make the film available to backers as a digital download, and he’s come up with some creative rewards for backers, including homemade cookies, memorabilia, and accompanying backers to dinners and amusement parks. “This project is all about finding the humor and joy in life, and I love my fans, so I wanted to thank them for their support in creative ways. Besides, I work in Hollywood, so I’ve done a lot worse things for money.”
