Since proving his dramatic acting chops in Broadway’s  M.Butterfly, entertainer Alec Mapa has mostly kept audiences in stitches with his comic work in television series such as Desperate Housewives and Ugly Betty and his hilarious one-man shows. The versatile performer will display all facets of his personality with the Outfest Fusion world premiere of Alec Mapa: Baby Daddy on March 15, the same night Mapa will receive the prestigious 2014 Fusion Achievement Award. Directed by Andrea James, the documentary incorporates Mapa’s signature stand-up comedy into a behind-the-scenes look at how his life has changed since he and hubby Jamison Hebert adopted their son Zion. Mapa chatted with Queerty about his new movie, what the award means to him and how the entertainment industry has changed for people of color.

Alec Mapa talks to GLAAD about his Fusion film fest honor and fatherhood

GLAAD: Congratulations on your Fusion Achievement Award from Outfest!  What does winning this award and the festival itself mean to you?

Alec Mapa: Gosh, I’ve been flying under the radar so many years. Winning a career achievement award means my efforts haven’t gone entirely unnoticed. It’s humbling because the festival has acknowledged that my work as an out gay artist has been of value to our community and it’s weird because honestly, I didn’t think anyone was paying attention. I thought I was just a gay guy telling fart jokes who sometimes was on TV, but apparently there’s more to me than that.

GLAAD: In addition to being honored by the festival, your performance film Alec Mapa: Baby Daddy will have its world premiere that same night, Saturday March 15.  What topics can audience expect to watch you tackle in the new film?

AP: Baby Daddy is all about how my husband and I became parents through the foster adopt system. It starts out as a very rowdy, very blue comedy special and then morphs into a more theatrical, intimate storytelling event. I cover the sensitive topic of aging in the gay community, the crime of twenty-something gays not knowing who Bette Davis is, the experience of hosting the gay porn awards for Showtime, the effect parenthood has had on our sex life, and how adopting a five-year-old boy turned our lives upside down. I wrote the show to be enjoyable and moving regardless of whether or not you liked kids. You can absolutely hate children and still have a good time.

'Daddy, Find Your Light': Alec Mapa on Baby Daddy, Fatherhood, and Auntie Mame

BY FRANK LOWE MARCH 04 2014

I recently had a candid talk with the hilarious Alec Mapa, the gay star of stage and screen, about his forthcoming comedy special Baby Daddy. In it, he discusses everything from gay sex to fatherhood, and it will be debuting March 15 at Outfest Fusion in Los Angeles (and I will be there too!), which you can buy tickets to here.

Frank Lowe: Hi!
Alec Mapa: Well, hello — I feel like I already know you because of Twitter. (follow @AlecMapa)

Technically you’re popping my interview cherry for The Advocate, so I’m thrilled it’s starting with you. I’m a total fan.
Mmm, OK! [In a “hey, hunty” kind of tone]

So, you have this new stand-up special called Baby Daddy. What’s the story behind it?
I originally made Baby Daddy just to give myself a damn job! 2012 was a slim year, TV-wise, so I wrote this and traveled the country performing it. Sure enough, it has become super timely, with all of the antigay initiatives popping up and the head of the Catholic League on CNN saying we’re harmful to children and the only purpose to marriage is to start a family. We’re kind of a voice in the wilderness now, saying “We’re not who you say we are.”

Interview with Andrea James:

Monika: Today it is my pleasure and honour to interview Andrea James, a very prolific American artist, writer, film producer, director, businesswoman and LGBT rights activist. Hello Andrea!

Andrea: Hi Monika—thanks for interviewing me!

Monika: Having so many talents, which profession do you enjoy most?

Andrea: I enjoy writing educational information, because that fulfills my interest in teaching. Unfortunately, we live in a world where a large swath of people can’t be reached through the written word, so I also work in film and television.
