Damiana Garcia had a fascinating interview with the gorgeous and glam duo Calpernia Addams and Andrea James on the 2014 GLAAD Media Awards red carpet. They discussed the recent blog pieces they wrote for The Huffington Post and Boing Boing, and the general cultural conversation that’s taking place right now regarding “RuPaul’s Drag Race” and the transgender community.

RuPaul's Drag Race gets schooled on sensitivity

Still, it’s not as though all trans people are demanding that Logo #CancelRuPaul, and it’s important to remember that LGBT history is bizarrely full of scolds and puritans who want nothing more than to airbush out or silence anything flamboyant, hypersexual, or weird. Writer and trans activist Andrea James wrote a lengthy defense of RuPaul that points out how trans homophobia can be just as noxious as gay transphobia, although the latter has much more power to marginalize.’

Vegans vs. Carnivores: Living Things’ Eric Shapiro

MM Editors

April 15, 2014

MM: For Living Things: A Vegan & Meat Debate, you crafted a gripping drama with a very micro-budget set up: a dialogue over food choices that escalates into a surprise ending.

ES: With both my films, I knew I was ready to go when I was so excited about the premise and material that I was completely willing to go back and make the film a second time if I felt I screwed it up the first time. When I’m getting that kind of head-to-toe reaction, I know it’s time to go for it. The process is so taxing that it’s not worth feeling mixed or damp about. With Living Things, I was ignited by the challenge of seeing how absorbing I could make an encounter between just two characters. Since they’re in a conflict over veganism and meat-eating, dinner was a natural setting, so we were fully justified in setting the film at a dinner table. We had limited funds and limited time, but it was difficult to resist. I’d love to make a film on a larger scale, but at the same time, I want the ones I’m actually able to make to come out solid. So I’ll probably keep things tight and spare until I can afford not to.

Director Andrea James premieres ALEC MAPA: BABY DADDY

Published on Mar 28, 2014

Andrea’s prepared remarks: Thanks to all of you for creating and supporting diversity in LGBT cinema– Outfest Fusion is so critical right now! I’d also like to thank all of our crew and our producers, led by my friend and business partner Jamison Hebert, and our 400 Kickstarter backers and private contributors. Crowdsourcing yay! My assistant director Patty Cornell saved me many times as we filmed, and my vision for this film would not have happened without the remarkable work of cinematographer Ian McGlocklin, sound editor and mixer Sabi Tulok, my co-editor and postproduction supervisor Bryan Lukasik, and composer Marc Jackson. I’d especially like to thank Alec, Jamie, and Zion for letting me follow them around with cameras on a busy show day. I wanted this film to show real gay dads without the primetime TV filters: in bed, kissing, joking about sex, and in the end simply being a loving family just like any other family. That’s what I felt we needed to see right now to push the envelope. So let’s watch some envelope-pushing comedy from Alec! Thank you again for joining us for our World Premiere of Alec Mapa: Baby Daddy!

America’s Gaysian Sweetheart and Nonprofit Organization Join Forces to Encourage the LGBT Community to Build Families through Fostering and Adoption.

LOS ANGELES, CA—RaiseAChild.US is pleased to announce its participation as the exclusive Outreach Sponsor for “Alec Mapa: Baby Daddy,” a documentary about actor/comedian Alec Mapa’s one-man show focused on his experience adopting his son from the foster care system. RaiseAChild.US is a national nonprofit organization that encourages the LGBT community to build families through fostering and adoption, to serve the needs of the 400,000 children in the U.S. foster care system.

A talented actor who has appeared in television and film and on
stage, Mapa has been featured in recurring roles on ABC’s
“Desperate Housewives” and “Ugly Betty,” and is now starring in
ABC Family’s “Switched at Birth.” In “Alec Mapa: Baby Daddy,” Mapa
masterfully weaves hilarious anecdotes with compelling insight for
prospective fost-adopt parents, explaining why they should build
their families through the foster care system. The film is directed by Andrea James and produced by Mapa’s husband, Jamison Hebert.

“Our son Zion is the greatest gift my husband and I ever received,” says Mapa. “It is a great privilege to tell our story and inspire others to became parents through the foster care system.”

“Alec has been the highlight of many RaiseAChild.US outreach efforts and events to encourage and educate our LGBT community to foster and adopt,” says Rich Valenza, RaiseAChild.US Founder and CEO. “We are pleased to support his movie as an Outreach Sponsor so that more people can experience his message.”

According to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services’ Administration for Children & Families, there are 400,000 children in our nation’s foster care system. More than 104,000 of these children are available and waiting to be adopted. Families certified for either foster or adoptive placements are in short supply.

RaiseAChild.US campaigns welcome and support prospective LGBT parents while putting images of LGBT families into public spaces through PSAs, print media, and outdoor advertising. Since 2011, RaiseAChild.US has engaged more than 2,000

When Alec Mapa was presented with the Outfest Fusion Achievement Award in Los Angeles on Saturday night, the man known for making audiences laugh on shows like Ugly Betty and Half & Half couldn’t help but get a little serious.

Mapa received the award at the Egyptian Theatre before the screening of the film Alec Mapa: Baby Daddy, a documentary build around his stage show of the same name which tells the story of raising his adopted son, Zion, with husband Jamie Hebert who produced the film.

‘Most of all, I would like to thank my son Zion,’ Mapa said as he concluded his acceptance speech, ‘because he’s given me the best possible story to tell.’

I had seen Alec Mapa’s one-man show Baby Daddy when he performed it at the Renberg Theater so I was a bit surprised to be laughing even harder seeing it again on Saturday night in movie version at Outfest Fusion.

This man, is a scream. Such a talent and that talent is showcased wonderfully in the documentary Alec Mapa: Baby Daddy directed by Andrea James.
