After the previously-on, the second episode of Fuse’s Transcendent pens with a raucous scene of AsiaSF on a busy night. The party atmosphere belies the fact that, after the obligatory introductions of Episode 1, the show is laying the groundwork for some tension to develop.

The premiere episode of Fuse’s Transcendent, a docu-series following five of the performers from San Francisco’s only transgender cabaret, aired this week. It’s short and rather to the point, introducing Nya, Xristina, Bambiana, Bionka, and L.A., a recent hire who’s just at the start of her transition, with lots of jump cuts around town. L.A. is introduced during a performance montage as a plucked-from-the-audience eagerness spreads across her face, quickly establishing herself as the show’s heart.

I Am Cait has given us a look at the life of America’s highest-profile transgender woman, but most trans women’s lives are very, very different. Enter Fuse’s new docu-series, Transcendent, premiering tonight at 11:30pm ET/PT.
The series follows a group of transgender performers at the famous AsiaSF Cabaret & Restaurant in San Francisco. Transcendent was produced by World of Wonder Productions – the team behind BUST favorites like RuPaul’s Drag Race and Big Freedia: Queen Of Bounce – so you know it’s gonna be good.

EBONY.com had the pleasure of speaking with Transcendent cast member Bionka, the sole Black female cast member. She’s fearless, strong, and dedicated to improving lives, as evidenced by her work with City of Refuge, an organization that helps transgender people of color. We talk trans representation, what (if any) pressures she has to represent Black trans women, and what audiences can learn from the show.
