Internet-fuelled knowledge exchange has dramatically improved the awareness of transgender rights, says a leading advocate.
Discrimination, harassment and even violence towards transgender people has proven to be an ugly element of many societies, Australia included.
7 News spoke with Andrea James, a transgender advocate, writer, film producer and director based in Los Angeles, on the issue.
James will be in Australia next month for a debate on the topic and to highlight that strong progress on transgender rights has already been made.

IQ² will take over the City Recital Hall on March 3 to discuss this important human rights issue which will highlight the role gender recognition and gender identity play in transphobia.
On hand to lead the debate will be a slew of trans advocates including Andrea James and Peter Hyndal.
James is a transgender advocate, writer, film producer and director based in Los Angeles. She appeared in the HBO documentary Middle Sexes, and is a consulting producer on the series Transcendent and consults on productions featuring transgender characters such asTransamerica.

“Deeply held beliefs and subtle biases often hinder this ethical imperative. Overcoming these will lead to a healthier society where everyone is freed from oppressive gendered expectations,” James says.

Speaking for the motion will be:
Andrea James is a transgender advocate, writer, film producer and director based in Los Angeles. She appeared in the HBO documentary Middle Sexes, is a consulting producer on the series Transcendent and consults on productions featuring transgender characters such as Transamerica. Andrea’s writing has appeared in The Atlantic and book she co-edited, Letters For My Sisters.
Andrea says “Deeply held beliefs and subtle biases often hinder this ethical imperative. Overcoming these will lead to a healthier society where everyone is freed from oppressive gendered expectations”
Peter Hyndal has been working with transgender communities since the 1990s. This work has included the development of award winning community projects as well as direct involvement in law reform work such as the Australian Passport Policy and the ACT Change of Sex Provisions. Peter is the Director of Transformative Solutions, an organisation providing gender related policy advice and training.
Peter says “Society’s obsession with categorising people by gender unnecessarily limits all of our lives. Policing trans identities is damaging and prevents us from exploring these structures in more useful and complex ways”
The panellists who will engage in this debate from a radical feminist and faith based perspective are
Bronwyn Winter is an Associate Professor at the University of Sydney specialising in gender, sexual orientation, race, human rights and feminism. Her books include Hijab and the Republic: Uncovering the French Headscarf Debate and September 11, 2001: Feminist Perspectives. The focus of her current work is LGBTI human rights and asylum rights, and a co-edited an anthology on the state and gay marriage.
Bronwyn says “Gender isn’t about personal identity, it’s social and political. It’s not about how you feel; it’s about how the two-caste system of gender serves the established order”
John Haldane is a Professor of Philosophy at the Centre for Ethics, Philosophy and Public Affairs at Scotland’s University of St Andrews. He is a regular contributor in BBC programming, The Times and The Daily Telegraph (UK). John has authored and edited many books including An Intelligent Person’s Guide to Religion, Faithful Reason: Essays Catholic and Philosophical and Atheism and Theism.
John says “What is reasonable to expect or demand in a liberal society? Diversity, comprising different cultures, traditions and value systems, restricts what social stance can be expected, let alone required”
During consultation with the trans community prior to establishing this debate, it became obvious that there are a range of views within the trans community around the relative merits of publicly discussing or debating transphobia.
The Carmen Rupe Memorial Trust has established a Facebook forum with the intention of providing a safe space for the trans and gender diverse community to discuss varying perspectives, in the hope of reaching far greater mutual understanding of each other’s point of view.

Drag icon Miss Coco Peru announced a Kickstarter campaign today to film a for-profit series pilot of “Conversations with Coco,” based on her live theatre fundraising events. Her scheduled guest for the planned August 13 pilot is Lily Tomlin.
Since 2005, Coco has held live fundraisers at the Los Angeles LGBT Center’s Renberg Theatre, engaging in intimate conversations with Hollywood legends, including Liza Minelli, Jane Fonda, and the late Bea Arthur.
Coco Peru said, “I am absolutely thrilled that Lily Tomlin is scheduled as our guest for the pilot. If we reach our financing goal, we’re filming it at the Renberg Theatre, which stages programs of the Lily Tomlin/Jane Wagner Cultural Arts Center, named in honor of Lily and her wife. I can’t wait to talk with Lily about her amazing life and career, including recent projects like Grandma and Grace and Frankie. And if the show gets picked up, a portion of the proceeds still goes straight to The Center. Well, ‘straight’ may not be the right word, but you get my point.”

Miss Coco Peru announces Conversations with Coco TV pilot campaign
Lily Tomlin scheduled as first guest for planned August 13 event
Drag icon Miss Coco Peru announced a Kickstarter campaign today to film a for-profit series pilot of Conversations with Coco, based on her live theatre fundraising events.
Jon Imparato, The Center’s Director of Cultural Arts, said, “We’ve felt Conversations with Coco would make a wonderful TV series since we debuted it on The Center’s stages ten years ago.”
The Center’s Chief of Staff Darrel Cummings said, “This is a wonderful opportunity to bring a series developed on The Center’s stages to the screen. We’re excited about the chance to bring this show to a wider audience, and to test a new way to generate revenue for The Center’s mission and programs.”
Project executive producer Jamison Hebert said, “We’ve wanted to work with Coco again since she appeared in our family-friendly media project Family Restaurant. Our last Kickstarter project, Alec Mapa: Baby Daddy, is now airing on Showtime. We hope to do something similar for Conversations with Coco.”
Coco mentioned the 2005 event with Bea Arthur as a big reason why bringing these live shows to a larger audience is so important: “People today still ask me, ‘Is there any way I can see that wonderful night with the late, great Bea Arthur?’ And the answer is ‘No,’ and that makes me sad.”
Coco added, “I am pulling out all the stops and offering rewards to my fans I’ve never even offered before,” including personalized memorabilia, lunch dates, and VIP tickets to the event.

Murdered trans woman has been treated callously by the media
Reading the arrest affidavit or local news reports about the death, you’d have no idea that the victim was a transgender woman. The wild curls and wide grins from her Facebook page – and above all else, her chosen name – have been omitted to a staggering degree. Instead Loera has been described using her birth name and masculine pronouns.
The Trans Road Map describes this as a worst-case scenario: “Women in several states have been [identified by their former names] in highly publicized landmark court cases.” It mentions Gwen Araujo, the California teenager who was brutally murdered by four men in 2002, as a tragic example of that indignity.
