Katie Couric dives into the ever-evolving topic of gender in the upcoming National Geographic documentary Gender Revolution: A Journey With Katie Couric. “The personal stories are what makes this documentary,” she said, adding that the docu explores not only individuals but also the science behind gender identity. “I like to talk to people and convey their stories…it’s a story of personal journey and the science…. I don’t think we ever truly get to know the individuals that are really having an impact on public policy.”

Why We Put a Transgender Girl on the Cover of National Geographic

Since we shared photos of the cover of our special issue on gender on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter, tens of thousands of people have weighed in with opinions, from expressions of pride and gratitude to utter fury. More than a few have vowed to cancel their subscriptions.

These comments are a small part of the profound discussion going on right now about gender. Our January issue focuses mostly on young people and how gender roles play out around the world. Transgender on Tinder? Now You Can Identify Yourself That Way

The update, which was released on Tuesday, was designed in consultation with transgender community leaders and other prominent transgender people, including the activists Andrea James and Nick Adams and several entertainers connected to the award-winning Amazon show “Transparent,” like the actress Trace Lysette, the musician Our Lady J and Zackary Drucker, a producer on the show.

Ms. Drucker and Ms. James said they hoped the update would make it easier and safer for transgender people to look for love. Transgender people face far higher rates of violence than the general population, in particular transgender women of color, and Ms. James said that in romantic situations “there’s a stereotype that we are trying to deceive people.”

“Dating for trans people is generally safer via an app like Tinder,” Ms. James said. “I find it much safer to make connections online versus having a stranger approach me in a cafe or bar.”
