At the beginning of Gender Revolution, Katie Couric‘s new documentary for National Geographic, she says: “It used to be so simple: You were a boy, or you were a girl … but that was then, and this is now.” Immediately, a scene from Amazon’s Transparent flashes across the screen. Jill Soloway’s critically-acclaimed series is just one example of how gender has dominated the cultural conversation in recent years.

couric-gender-revolution-02

“Gender Revolution: A Journey with Katie Couric,” airs at 9 p.m. Eastern/8 p.m. Central on the National Geographic Channel. Couric and her producers invested a lot of time and money, no doubt, to travel the country and even overseas to explore gender-identity issues that go beyond the transgender discussion.

“Some people watching this might say, ‘What the heck is going on here?'” Couric says during the two-hour special as she sits down with several students at Yale University. “Why are we suddenly seeing huge changes in the way the public looks at this?”

Katie Couric's Advice on Not Feeling Powerless Is *Exactly* What You Need to Hear Right Now

Tonight, National Geographic will air a documentary about the gender revolution taking place in America—which completely makes sense under an Obama administration. Under the current Trump administration, it might feel a little like a progressive last hurrah—especially since the rights the LGBTQ community and allies fought so hard for feel somewhat tenuousdue to that leaked executive order draft. The White House issued a statement saying LGBTQ people will—at the very least—not face workplace discrimination, but things are tense and scary, and yes, many people feel powerless.

With this at the back of our minds, MarieClaire spoke to Gender Revolution’s Katie Couric about finding our voices, the LGBTQ community’s future under Trump, and society’s obsession with the gender binary.

National Geographic has released a teaching guide for their issue and special on gender. From National Geographic magazine Editor in Chief Susan Goldberg:

At National Geographic, we have a nearly 130-year history of bringing stories about cultures and science to the forefront. The evolution of our societal thinking about gender—as well as newly revealed complexities about the science of gender— is no exception. The story of gender plays out all around us. More and more, celebrities are shining a spotlight on the subject. But more quietly, our children, parents, teachers, medical professionals, and officials every day confront an array of issues with gender at the center. Everywhere we looked, in the U.S. and around the globe, individuals and organizations are fighting to redefine traditional gender roles, whether it is girls in war-torn Sierra Leone rejecting the cultural norm of female genital mutilation and child marriage, men in Sweden making use of extended paternal leave after having a child, or people who reject binary, boy–girl labels and find their true identity elsewhere on a gender spectrum. This is why we’re devoting the January issue of National Geographic magazine entirely to an exploration of gender issues—in science, social systems, and civilizations—and why we decided to feature a transgender person for the first time on the cover of our magazine: nine-year-old Avery Jackson.

51%: Women and the Future of Politics

51_Women_and_the_Future_of_Politics_Front_Cover_Kindle_Ready.297132305_std

I’m honored to be quoted in 51%: Women and the Future of Politics.

aj-quote-51

I’m quoted at the start of Chapter 11:

To understand how women are systematically denied power, we must start by examining who is creating and policing the boundaries for who gets included as a woman. As long as US policy and social customs are organized around these boundaries, a segregationist mindset will permeate so pervasively that the iniquities it brings about for women will seem “natural” without closer examination.

A note on transition of power

andrea-james-trans-march

I used to be heavily involved in politics, but it’s too frustrating for me. I prefer other ways to create change. I will always believe in America and the promise it holds for everyone.

People are sometimes surprised how patriotic I am. I make a lot of jokes, but that’s because I can. I revel in the freedom to say whatever I want. And the only reason I can is because of some of the few things I take very seriously: the American rights to free speech, a free press, the separation of church and state, the right to protest, and the right of all citizens to have a say in our shared destiny.

Stay hopeful and stay vigilant, and never be afraid to make yourself heard in whatever manner works best for you, even (or especially) if you disagree with me. Inaction is the only true enemy of democracy. This is the land of the free and the home of the brave, so live up to those words every day!
