I raced around as the light faded at the Getty Center and got a few interesting shots.

One of the thousands of lovely flowers in the Getty Center gardens.

The Getty Center has a lovely new sculpture garden. We got there at the perfect time in terms of light.

I snapped this one after the sun was just out of the gardens, which allowed all the subtleties in the white petals to show through.

Saturday, August 16, 2008I went to the Getty Center yesterday with a pal, and we shot some lovely stuff. I’ll post one a day over the next week or so.

I have been trying some new things with flash use during the day, to make the background fall off a bit and give some depth of field. This was taken in broad daylight in my garden, to try to gave a night for day feel.

I found this amazing iridescent green beetle in my garden today. I couldn’t get any shots that captured how brilliant the shell was. It looked like a flying jewel. Update: Regular reader Michael correctly identified it as a Figeater Beetle. I never saw one on the fig tree at my old place, so I didn’t know about these little guys!

Over capacity. Technically wrong. Worthless.

The hummingbirds have been very shy lately, flying away if they see me come out the door. The girl decided she was over all that flying away and kept eating, which is unusual mid-day.

I have been playing around with extreme closeups of backlit flowers. This one was dry. Wet to come.

Thursday, August 07, 2008When I first started in advertising, I had the pleasure of shooting a live-action commercial with director Mike Patterson. The series was for a very mundane household product but was very successful. Mike is best known as an animator, and he was at visual effects house Rhythm & Hues at the time. The spots had a lot of in-camera effects that turned out great.
If you want to see some amazing experimental animation from pre-computer days, before motion-capture, before digital rotoscoping, check out the curated collection on the Cal Arts site: CalArts: 20 Years of Experimental Animation, 1970 - 1990 Besides Commuters, I recommend (in no order) Luma Nocturna, Travellers Palm, Phases, Pink Triangle, Te Utu, and The Trap. They also have showcases of recent work.
